Cesarean Sections

A Cesarean section, more commonly known as a “C-section,” is a surgical procedure used to deliver a baby. C-sections are typically performed when vaginal birth poses a serious health risk to the mother or her unborn child.

Although there are plenty of other circumstances that may necessitate a C-section, these are the most common conditions that often lead to a Cesarean delivery:

  • Placenta previa (a condition in which the placenta lies low in the uterus and covers the cervix)
  • Placental abruption (which occurs when the placenta separates from the uterine lining)
  • Uterine rupture
  • Baby in breech position
  • Fetal distress
  • Preeclampsia
  • Birth defects
  • Multiple births

At Inspira, we recognize the needs of mothers who give birth via C-section, and we strive to ensure a safe, positive birth experience. When a birthing team makes a conscious effort to make a C-section as much like a vaginal or natural birth experience as possible, it is often called a  “family-centered cesarean” or “gentle” C-section. At Inspira, we strive to provide this type of C-section whenever possible. This includes post-delivery, skin-to-skin contact after C-sections to allow mother and baby to bond immediately after birth. This is part of our effort to reduce the separation of mothers and infants, and our team will do everything in their power to keep your family together while you’re in the hospital.
