Elbow and Shoulder Pain Whether you’re a golfer, tennis player or crew team member, you run the risk of incurring elbow or shoulder pain over the course of your athletic career. There are a wide range of conditions affecting the elbow and shoulder, including these common ones: Tendonitis Lateral Epicondylitis (tennis elbow) Medial Epicondylitis (golfer’s elbow) Bursitis Cubital Tunnel Syndrome Rotator Cuff Tear Treatment Treatments for these types of injuries vary greatly. Tennis elbow, for instance, can typically be resolved with rest, ice and a compression bandage. Other conditions, such as bursitis, benefit from corticosteroid injections to reduce pain and inflammation. In many cases, imaging or lab tests might be necessary if initial at-home treatments and/or over-the-counter pain relievers fail. Physical therapy is a great tool for strengthening the elbow and shoulder and is often recommended as a follow-up to your initial round of treatment.
