Hemorrhoids People struggling with hemorrhoids may be too embarrassed to talk with their doctor about symptoms. Those silently struggling shouldn’t be afraid to speak up to get some relief from the unpleasant results that internal or external hemorrhoids can bring. Also known as piles, hemorrhoids are swollen veins that can form in the lower part of the anus and rectum. Symptoms include painless bleeding, itching or irritation in the anal area, discomfort, soreness or leaking feces. Some occur inside the rectum and are not visible from the outside, while others form externally under the skin around the anus. If home treatments, medicines and nonsurgical options like rubber band ligation are not helping, your doctor may recommend a complete removal of the hemorrhoids, known as a hemorrhoidectomy. Straining can sometimes cause an internal hemorrhoid to protrude, or prolapse, through the anus. When that happens, your doctor may perform a minimally invasive surgery to staple the hemorrhoid back in place. You’ll typically be able to go home the same day as the hemorrhoid surgery.
