ACL Injuries

The anterior cruciate ligament, or ACL, is one of the primary ligaments found in your knee. It is also one of the most frequently injured ligaments. Sports that require sudden stops, starts and high-impact pivots, such as soccer, basketball, football and skiing, are a common catalyst for this type of injury. Pain, tenderness and swelling often accompany an ACL injury, as well as a loss of range of motion, instability and issues walking.


To determine the severity of the injury, your physician will conduct a physical examination and take X-rays—possibly an MRI—to check for potential fractures or damage to surrounding areas.

Physical therapy and rehabilitation may restore your knee to its original condition, or close to it. Nonoperative methods, however, can result in an increased risk of re-injury. Your physician may recommend surgery to reconstruct the ligament and repair the tear.
