The birth process is mediated by a hormone called oxytocin. Oxytocin, also known as the "love hormone," is released in higher concentrations when women feel safe, cared for, and relaxed. During labor, some women utilize water to attain a state of deep relaxation to aid in their birthing process and some women choose to birth their babies in water.

A water birth in a hospital setting gives women the chance to enter a deep tub of warm water in the later stages of active labor.
