SJH Medical Laboratories at Regional Medical Center, Elmer Hospital and Bridgeton Health Center Receive Accreditation from CAP and AABB

VINELAND (July 16) – South Jersey Healthcare’s (SJH) medical laboratories at the SJH Regional Medical Center, Elmer Hospital and Bridgeton Health Center received accreditation from the Commission on Laboratory Accreditation of the College of American Pathologists (CAP). The system was awarded accreditation based on the results of an on-site inspection completed this spring.

The laboratory’s medical director, Larry Mapow, M.D., was advised of this national recognition and congratulated for the “excellence of the services being provided.” CAP accredited laboratories undergo evaluations and meet rigorous laboratory standards designed to ensure quality patient care. The accreditation places SJH’s laboratories among an exclusive group of more than 6,000 worldwide which have met the highest standards of excellence.

The CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program, begun in the early 1960s, is recognized by the federal government as being equal to or more stringent than the government’s own inspection program. During the CAP accreditation process, inspectors examine the laboratory’s records and quality control of procedures for the preceding two years. CAP inspectors also examine the entire staff’s qualifications, the laboratory’s equipment, facilities, safety program and record, as well as the overall management of the laboratory. This stringent inspection programs is designed to specifically ensure the highest standard of care for the laboratory’s patients.

SJH’s laboratories also received accreditation from the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) for exceptional performance of transfusion services. The accreditation is based upon an AABB assessment and recognizes SJH’s commitment to continuously improving procedures in order to attain the highest level of patient care.

“I would like to commend the staff and management in all of our laboratories for this outstanding achievement,” said Ellie Marino, SJH Laboratory Administrative Director. “It is their hard work that allows us to provide the highest quality laboratory services to our patients.”

SJH is a nonprofit, integrated health care system, providing access to a continuum of health services. SJH provides hospital services, numerous community health clinics, home health services, and specialty services, which serve the medical and health care needs of Southern New Jersey residents.
