Neurosurgery Close to Home: Putting Advanced Care in Patients’ Backyards

Aug 1, 2020

In the past, patients in South Jersey had to travel to have surgery for brain and spine issues. But recently, Inspira has strengthened its neurosurgery program to provide advanced care right in South Jersey with the help of Dr. Richard Strauss and Dr. R.J. Meagher.

Dr. Strauss and Dr. Meagher diagnose and treat patients with common brain and spine conditions, such as brain tumors and cysts, brain trauma, compression fractures, degenerative spondylolisthesis, herniated and bulging discs, spinal stenosis and all areas of central and peripheral nerve injury. Both neurosurgeons take a conservative approach to treatment and work closely with patients and their primary physicians to educate them on non-surgical options.

When surgery is needed, Dr. Strauss and Dr. Meagher perform procedures at all three Inspira Medical Center’s in Elmer, Mullica Hill, and Vineland. With stereotactic image guidance and 3-D imaging and models, Inspira’s neurosurgery team determines the safest surgical route preoperatively and, in many cases, uses minimally invasive techniques. These techniques enable the neurosurgeons to make smaller, more focused incisions and disturb less muscle and tissue—ultimately shortening the recovery period.

Yet another advantage to patients in South Jersey is the ability to provide coordinated care to patients in every stage of treatment together with other providers. Patients struggling with these neurological conditions can feel confident knowing they can get expert care no matter where they are in their care journey.
