CUMBERLAND COUNTY, NJ (September 30, 2014) – Inspira Medical Center Vineland has expanded its surgical capabilities and is now performing single-site robotic surgery—an advanced minimally invasive option that provides area patients with virtually scarless results. The medical center’s robotic surgeons were the first in the region to offer single-site cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal) this past year and now, they are providing single-site hysterectomy (uterus removal) as well.
“It always has been and continues to be our goal to provide area patients with the latest minimally invasive surgical options close to home said Elizabeth Sheridan, R.N., M.A., chief operating officer of Inspira Medical Center Vineland and chief nursing executive. “Over the past four years, the robotics program at Inspira Medical Center Vineland has grown tremendously and we are very pleased to continue bringing cutting-edge surgical care right here to the community.”
Since the addition of robotic surgery at Inspira Medical Center Vineland in 2010, the program has expanded and now features the region’s most experienced robotic surgeons offering a wide-range of specialties, including colorectal for intestinal/bowel procedures; bariatric or weight loss; general surgery such as hernia repair or gallbladder removal; gynecology procedures including hysterectomy; and urology for kidney, bladder or prostate surgery.
“The world of robotic surgery is the most recent entry in the long list of "science fiction" becoming science fact,” said Per M. Montero-Pearson, M.D., of Medical Alliance of Southern New Jersey and chairman of surgical services at Inspira Medical Center Vineland. “The use of robotic surgery is continuously expanding and to be able to offer that technology right here at Inspira Medical Center Vineland, means that we are on the cutting edge in providing the region with the latest and most effective minimally invasive surgical procedures. It is a very exciting time for our medical center and for modern surgical medicine.”
During a robotic surgery the surgeon is 100% in control of the surgical system, which translates his or her hand movements into smaller, more precise movements of tiny instruments inside the patient’s body. Inspira’s robot also features a magnified 3D high-definition vision system, which allows the surgeon to operate with enhanced vision and precision.
For single-site robotic surgery, the surgeon makes only one small incision in the patient’s belly button, resulting in even more patient benefits, including low rate of complications, low conversion rate to open surgery, minimal to no scarring, minimal pain, shorter hospital stay, low blood loss, low rate of infection and high patient satisfaction.
