Understand Your Results

There are currently 3 types of tests of COVID tests available. The rapid antigen test and Viral Polymerase Chain Test( PCR or “molecular test”) help to identify current infection. The third test, the antibody test, is used to identify past infection.

***Please note: No tests are perfect and 100% accurate. It is possible to get a false negative or false positive result. Sometimes the result can be inconclusive, and we’ll need to redo the test.

Rapid Antigen Testing

Rapid, point-of-care diagnostic tests use a sample from the nose or throat that can be analyzed at the doctor’s office or clinic where the sample is collected, and results may be available in minutes. You will be asked to wait on-site for your results. If your results are negative, we may ask you to take a supplementary test called PCR.

  • Positive Result: Most likely* you DO currently have an active COVID-19 infection and can give the virus to others.
  • Positive Result Next Steps: Stay home and follow CDC guidance on steps to take to treat your symptoms and avoid spreading your illness to others. Contact your primary care physician to follow up. Talk to your employer about your test results right away.
  • Negative Result: You either DO NOT currently have an active COVID-19 infection or you DO have COVID-19, but were tested too early or late into the virus’ progression. Regardless of whether or not you are experiencing symptoms, you may still be able to give the virus to others.
  • Negative Result Next Steps: Even after a negative rapid test result, if you’re experiencing symptoms, have recently traveled or been exposed to someone with COVID-19, stay home and follow CDC guidance to avoid spreading potential illness to others. If your symptoms worsen, contact your primary care physician and ask about PCR testing. Remember, the virus can be spread even by asymptomatic people. It’s important to continue social distancing, hand washing and mask wearing.

Viral Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) Testing

This test checks if you have a current COVID-19 infection. A sample is taken from the nose or throat and the specimen is sent to a lab. The time it takes to get these results varies. Generally, results are available within a few days.

  • Positive Result: Most likely* you DO currently have an active COVID-19 infection and can give the virus to others.
  • Positive Result Next Steps: Stay home and follow CDC guidance on steps to take if you are sick and contact your primary care doctor. If you are a health care or critical infrastructure worker, talk to your employer about your test result right away.
  • Negative Result: Most likely* you DO NOT currently have an active COVID-19 infection.
  • Negative Result Next Steps: If you have symptoms, you should keep monitoring symptoms and talk to your doctor about staying home and if you need to get tested again. If you don’t have symptoms, you should get tested again only if your doctor and/or workplace tells you to.

Antibody Testing

The current antibody test helps to identify past infection. It is not indicated for identifying active and current infection. The antibody test can confirm the presence of antibody a few days after illness but optimally should be performed 14 days after onset of illness.

  • Positive Result: You were likely PREVIOUSLY INFECTED with COVID-19.
  • Positive Result Next Steps: You may be protected from re-infection (have some degree of immunity temporarily), but this cannot be said with certainty. Scientists are conducting studies now to provide more information. Take steps to protect yourself and others.
  • Negative Result: You likely* NEVER HAD (or have not yet developed antibodies to) a COVID-19 infection.
  • Negative Result Next Steps: You could still get COVID-19. Take steps to protect yourself and others.
