A stroke is an attack on the brain that can happen to anyone, at any time. They happen when blood and oxygen are blocked from traveling to a portion of your brain by a clot (ischemic stroke) or because a weakened vessel ruptures and bleeds into the brain (hemorrhagic stroke).
Strokes are the fifth leading cause of death in the U.S. and the leading cause of disability.
