Friday, September 5, 2008 - SJH Brings Digital Mammography to Vineland and Bridgeton

VINELAND, NJ – In continuing its mission to provide the most comprehensive imaging services to the community, South Jersey Healthcare has acquired an advanced digital mammography system at both the SJH Regional Medical Center in Vineland and the SJH Bridgeton Health Center. The health system also offers the technology at the SJH Millville Imaging Center and SJH Elmer Hospital.

With digital mammography available at four SJH locations, patients throughout the county now have convenient access to this state-of-the-art technology. The new equipment detects some cancers earlier, requires fewer images, and exposes patients to less radiation.

While the traditional mammogram is the most common method of breast cancer detection, it may not be as effective for women with dense breast tissue, particularly those younger than 50. Dense breast tissue can make mammograms more difficult to read than images of fatty breast tissue. For these women, digital mammography offers another comforting option.

“There is no guaranteed way to prevent breast cancer, and that is why regular mammograms are so important,” said Jacqueline Gomberg, M.D., director of Women’s Imaging at South Jersey Healthcare. “Mammograms are the most effective tool we have for finding abnormalities and an early diagnosis of breast cancer offers the greatest chance of surviving the disease. We are pleased to now offer digital mammography in four locations because this technology will allow us to assist even more women in the fight against breast cancer.”

And because the images are digital, doctors can view them immediately in the hospital or their offices using a Picture Archiving Communications System (PACS). This allows patients to have their mammograms performed at any SJH location, and images can be electronically delivered to their physician’s office without the need to pick up or sign out films.

“Ultimately, we are looking to provide early detection to help women beat breast cancer,” said Dr. Gomberg. “This digital technology will help to facilitate that process for many of our patients.”

SJH’s award-winning Cancer Services program has provided state-of-the-art radiation therapy, medical oncology and cancer support services to thousands of patients in the region for more than 25 years. The program features an experienced team of board-certified physicians, registered radiation therapists and nationally-certified oncology nurses here in our community. SJH Cancer Services has also been a Fox Chase Cancer Center Partner for more than 12 years.

SJH Cancer Services also provides assistance to patients diagnosed with breast cancer through the SJH Breast Cancer Bridge Program, a free community service with offices at both SJH Elmer Hospital and SJH Regional Medical Center in Vineland. The Bridge helps area women cope with breast cancer by providing them with educational materials and resources. The program’s two nurses, who are also cancer survivors, act as a health care advocates for breast cancer patients, offering support, educational information and practical tips for coping with the changes that breast cancer brings to the survivor and her family.

All women are encouraged to schedule regular mammograms and yearly visits with their physicians. Women over the age of 20 should also perform monthly breast self-exams. While the thought of detecting breast cancer can be frightening, take comfort: The earlier breast cancer is caught, the better chance of defeating it.
