Vineland, NJ (March 31)
South Jersey Healthcare (SJH) will accept three dietetic/nutrition students to its new dietetic internship program in April. The 10-month internship begins in September and is the only program offered in southern New Jersey accredited by the American Dietetic Association’s Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education.

SJH Clinical Nutrition Manager and Internship Director Maria Basche began developing the internship three years ago to address the shortage of registered dietitians in our area. Programs were previously only available in northern New Jersey at the College of Saint Elizabeth in Morristown and at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey’s School of Health-Related Professions in Newark.

“I am excited that our internship program will bring registered dietitians to our area,” said Basche. “I am hopeful that we will attract people who want to live and work in South Jersey.”

Students with a four-year degree in Nutrition, Dietetics or nutrition-related fields are eligible for the fifth-year internship, which consists of 900 hours of supervised practice at SJH and in the community. Upon successful completion of the program, dietetic interns will be eligible to sit for the Registered Dietitian’s Exam.

“We have much to offer here at South Jersey Healthcare,” Basche said. “Our program is unique because it provides dietetic students in southern and central New Jersey on-the-job training close to home.”

SJH is a nonprofit, integrated health care system, providing access to a continuum of delivery services. SJH provides hospital services, numerous community health clinics, home health services, and specialty services, which serve the medical and healthcare needs of Southern New Jersey residents.
