Inspira’s John DiAngelo Presented NJHA Distinguished Service Award

Jan 30, 2020

The New Jersey Hospital Association honored John DiAngelo, president and CEO of Inspira Health, with its Distinguished Service Award. This honor recognizes a health care leader who has demonstrated strength, integrity, professionalism and a relentless commitment to a health care system. DiAngelo has dedicated over three decades of service to the health care industry, with two of those at Inspira Health. His passion for clinical excellence and service to the community have been hallmarks of his tenure since being named president and CEO in 2014.

“John has been a force for good health and good health care for decades,” said NJHA President and CEO Cathy Bennett. “We are so fortunate that he has shared his vision and no-holds-barred leadership with NJHA through his service on the NJHA Board and various committees and task forces. Although John is most deserving of this award for multitudes of reasons, the real winners are the people of South Jersey who have benefitted from his leadership in the region.”

DiAngelo has led Inspira on a path of extraordinary growth and innovation. While at the helm, Inspira has more than doubled its access points, from 60 to more than 150, and opened 10 urgent care centers. He oversaw the planning, construction and December 2019 opening of Inspira Medical Center Mullica Hill, and just cut the ribbon on an adjoining leading-edge cancer that is scheduled to open in February.

DiAngelo’s vision has established Inspira as a leader in innovation, transforming the way health care is delivered in South Jersey. He has propelled the network forward with Inspira’s Innovation Center to accelerate the development and implementation of leading-edge, patient-focused technologies, as well as a $1 million Innovation Fund to assist in potential start-up funding of new programs or scaling current innovations.

Under John’s leadership, Inspira successfully transformed into a High Reliability Organization, with all 6,000-plus employees and medical staff trained in the tools and behaviors of high reliability.

This transformation created a culture of safety that has led to a 90 percent decrease in serious preventable harm since late 2016.

DiAngelo has also guided efforts to address the social determinants of health. As a founding partner and major funder of the Cumberland County Housing First Collaborative, Inspira has helped place more than 70 formerly homeless individuals into their own homes. By providing each person with a place to call home and the needed wrap-around services, the collaborative has elevated the health and well-being of its neighbors, while significantly reducing the costs associated with acute medical care, emergency medical services and incarceration.

A new initiative to tackle food insecurity in the community has Inspira partnering with local schools and food banks to provide monthly school-based food pantries at three locations in Cumberland and Gloucester counties. This program is expected to expand to other schools in the region. Inspira is also opening two food farmacies to address food insecurity among its patients. Upon discharge, patients identified as being food insecure will be connected with an Inspira Food Farmacy where they can receive nutritious food on an ongoing basis. Counseling by a registered dietitian will also be provided.

“It’s rare to find an outstanding health care leader like John DiAngelo. His unwavering commitment to improving the health of the South Jersey community has positioned Inspira as a regional health care leader,” said Michael A. McLaughlin, Chairman of Inspira Health’s Board of Trustees. He has truly led the way toward a stronger health care future for South Jersey.”
