Learning Objectives

  • Review emerging evidence and new guidance from the American Hospital Association to build patient-centered care models to support transitions of care between emergency department, hospital and community-based settings for patients with pain and substance use disorder.
  • Describe current trends in illicit drug overdoses and substances implicated.
  • Describe multimodal and opioid-sparing analgesic strategies available in the ED.
  • Select appropriate buprenorphine induction strategies based on patient presentation and clinical circumstances.
