MAJOR FUNCTION:

Position Summary

The Radiation Oncology Physician Assistant provides comprehensive, evidence-based care to patients undergoing radiation therapy for cancer. Working collaboratively with radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, nurses, dosimetrists, social workers, and other members of the multidisciplinary oncology team, the PA evaluates, treats, educates, and follows patients throughout the continuum of care.

Position Responsibilities

Includes but is not limited to:

  • Perform comprehensive history and physical examinations
  • Evaluate patients before, during, and after radiation therapy
  • Manage acute and chronic toxicities associated with radiation therapy
  • Assess treatment response and monitor disease progression, including ordering diagnostic testing
  • Provide patient and family education and referrals as needed
  • Evaluate urgent oncology-related concerns, including treatment complications
  • Provide survivorship care and long-term follow-up
  • Perform consultations with the radiation oncologist for inpatients
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, tumor boards, clinical protocols, and evidence-based practice projects
  • Document patient encounters accurately and in a timely manner in the electronic medical record (EMR)

Position Experience Required

-Minimum of 2 years of radiation oncology experience preferred

-Knowledge of radiation oncology principles

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education & Experience:

  • Graduate from an accredited Physician Assistant program with a Master’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies.
  • Minimum of 1 year of practicing as a Physician Assistant in a hospital or outpatient clinical setting desired.
  • Minimum of 1 year of Advanced Practice Nurse experience in a hospital setting required.

Certification/Licensure:

  • Current License/Certification with the State of New Jersey.
  • National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) Certification required.
  • American Heart Association BLS certificate.
  • DEA optional.
