Protecting your skin from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays is one of the most effective ways to reduce your risk of skin cancer and premature aging. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) recent approval of a new sunscreen ingredient may provide consumers with more options for daily skin care.
For the first time in more than two decades, the FDA has approved a new over-the-counter sunscreen active ingredient, bemotrizinol. Bemotrizinol has been used in international sunscreen products for years and is known for providing broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays.
While UVB rays are the primary cause of sunburn, UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin and contribute to premature aging. Exposure to both types of ultraviolet radiation can increase the risk of skin cancer over time.
According to the FDA, bemotrizinol provides effective broad-spectrum protection for adults and children ages 6 months and older but does not absorb into the bloodstream.
“The FDA approval of bemotrizinol expands the tools available for sun protection,” said Anjali Sawhney, D.O., a primary care physician with Inspira Health. “Having more options can help consumers find products they are comfortable using every day.”
Many health care professionals view the approval as an important step forward for sun protection in the United States. Bemotrizinol is highly photostable, meaning it remains effective even after prolonged sun exposure. It also helps provide strong UVA coverage, an area where some sunscreen formulations have historically been less robust.
The FDA’s decision does not mean you need to replace your current sunscreen products. Existing broad-spectrum sunscreens that meet FDA requirements remain effective when used correctly.
“The most effective sunscreen is the one you use consistently. Whether a product contains mineral filters, traditional chemical filters or newer ingredients, regular application remains the key to protection,” said Dr. Sawhney. “This approval simply adds another ingredient option that consumers can choose.”
When choosing a sunscreen, it is important to look for products that are:
Although sunscreen is important for protecting skin health, it works best when combined with other sun-safe behaviors. Regardless of the sunscreen you choose, experts recommend:
“These simple habits can help reduce cumulative sun damage throughout your lifetime,” said Dr. Sawhney. “A comprehensive approach is the best defense against skin cancer.”
Skin cancer remains one of the most common cancers in the United States, making prevention and early detection critical. While the approval of bemotrizinol represents progress in sunscreen technology, the most important factor is still consistency in your sun protection routine.
“Whether you’re spending a day at the beach or simply running errands, incorporating sun protection in your daily routine can have lasting benefits for your skin health,” said Dr. Sawhney. “Your sun safety routine should include performing regular skin cancer self-screenings. If you notice a new, changing or unusual mole, persistent skin discoloration or other concerning skin changes, schedule an evaluation with a health care professional.”
