Being on the field has always felt like home for Penny. She grew up playing just about every sport, but lacrosse and soccer stayed with her. During her sophomore year of high school, a sudden knee injury while playing soccer changed everything. Penny had completely torn her ACL, putting the sports she loved on hold and beginning a recovery journey that tested her physically and mentally.
After ACL reconstruction surgery, Penny began physical therapy at Inspira Health with physical therapist Dan Flaherty, who helped guide her through each stage of rehabilitation. Together, they focused on rebuilding her strength, improving her range of motion and helping her regain the confidence she needed to return to the field. While the physical work was challenging, Penny says the mental side of recovery was just as difficult, especially watching her teammates play from the sidelines.
With hard work, determination and support from her care team, Penny reached important milestones and worked her way back to the soccer field. Her first game back was unforgettable. She returned with confidence and scored a hat trick.
Today Penny is preparing to play lacrosse in college and plans to study physical therapy, inspired by the care and encouragement she received during her own recovery at Inspira. “He [Dan] helped me become a better version of myself, not just physical but with my mindset too,” she said.
