Clinical trials and research are an important part of the medication and treatment development process and contribute to strides made in health care every day.
Types of Clinical Trials
In an investigational study, patients receive specific interventions that may include medication, devices, procedures or recommendations in lifestyle behaviors such as diet. These trials may compare new treatments to a placebo, the existing treatment method or no treatment at all. An investigational study is the primary way for researchers to find out if a new treatment method is safe and effective.
In an observational study, investigators assess health outcomes of groups of people undergoing a treatment or lifestyle change for a particular condition. These interventions are often already a part of their routine medical care. Researchers collect data for observational studies using methods such as questionnaires and medical exams. Results of observational studies often identify new possibilities for investigational studies.
Benefits of Participating in a Clinical Study
Clinical studies are safe—by the time mediation and treatments reach this stage of their development, they have completed their pre-clinical phase and have been approved for study by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). And participating in clinical trials comes with many benefits for patients, such as:
- Access to new treatment methods before they’re available to others
- Satisfaction that your trial can potentially benefit people in the future
- Close monitoring and frequent check-ups from a team of physicians, research nurses and other health care professionals
- An active role in advancing treatment options
If you are participating in a trial or study, you may not incur additional costs and you may even be eligible for compensation for your time. Often, study-specific tests and treatments are provided at no cost.
