MAJOR FUNCTION:
The Ice and Water Systems Mechanic is responsible for the maintenance, repair, sanitation, and installation of hospital-wide ice machines, water dispensers, and associated hydration systems. This position plays a critical role in ensuring the safe and reliable operation of hydration equipment in patient care areas, staff facilities, and public zones. The role requires strict adherence to infection prevention protocols, safety regulations, and documentation standards in accordance with hospital policy and regulatory agencies.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education & Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Technical training or certifications in refrigeration preferred.
- 2+ years of experience in equipment maintenance or facilities operations, ideally in a healthcare or regulated environment.
Certification/Licensure:
- Valid driver’s license required to operate any Inspira owned vehicles. Must adhere to Inspira’s Fleet Policy requirements prior to hire.
- Refrigeration preferred.

Position Responsibilities
•Perform all scheduled preventive maintenance (PMs) and respond promptly to urgent work requests.
•Maintain hydration equipment according to manufacturer and hospital guidelines.
•Monitor and replace pre-filters and final water filters; ensure an adequate supply is always available on-site.
•Test water quality and verify equipment operates within specified temperature and sanitation ranges.
•Diagnose and repair malfunctioning ice machines, water dispensers, and related systems including filtration units, valves, compressors, and plumbing lines.
•Identify and report recurring problems, excessive wear, or mold/mildew buildup to supervisors to ensure timely remediation.
•Install new equipment, ensuring proper utility connections, drainage, airflow clearance, and adherence to safety standards.
•Disinfect and clean machines using only manufacturer-approved chemicals and always follow Instructions for Use (IFUs).
•Clean and sanitize all tools and equipment used in servicing machines to prevent cross-contamination.
•Maintain compliance with infection prevention standards, including documentation for inspections (Inspira, DNV, DOH).
•Keep detailed, accurate records of all cleaning, disinfection, maintenance, and repair procedures, including photos as needed.
•Maintain comprehensive service logs, inspection forms, maintenance schedules, and filter replacement records.
•Participate in safety audits and assist with inspections by the Joint Commission, Department of Health, and other regulatory bodies.
•Respond rapidly to service calls or hydration equipment issues in patient care areas, staff lounges, and public zones.
•Collaborate with supervisors to report hazards that may compromise patient, staff, or visitor safety.
•Follow all hospital policies regarding infection control, environmental safety, and patient privacy (HIPAA).
•Demonstrate strong knowledge of hand/power tools, testing instruments, and precision measurement devices.
•Apply basic plumbing and electrical knowledge relevant to ice/water machine maintenance and installation.
•Accurately perform numerical calculations related to equipment repairs and installation.
•Collaborate effectively with HVAC, plumbing, and electrical trades as systems intersect.
•Maintain inventory of tools, parts, and cleaning supplies.
•Assist other trades as needed and perform miscellaneous duties as directed by supervisors.
•May be required to perform seasonal tasks such as snow and ice removal from sidewalks and facility entrances.
