Boom! Bang! Protect Your Eyes and Ears from Fireworks Risks

Jun 23, 2025

Fireworks are a quintessential part of celebrating Independence Day. Even so, it's crucial to be aware of the potential risks these dazzling displays pose to our sensory health — specifically our vision and hearing. Understanding these risks can help you make informed decisions about Fourth of July celebrations for you and your family, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.

Potential risks to the eyes and ears

The chemical particles and debris produced by fireworks can cause significant eye injuries if you don’t take the proper precautions. “Short-term risks include corneal scratches, tears, burns and retinal detachment from direct exposure to sparks or debris,” said Brian Jerusik, D.O., chair of the Emergency Department at Inspira Medical Center Vineland. “Long-term risks include chronic eye irritation, retinal damage and in severe cases, permanent vision impairment.”

The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) recommends wearing protective eyewear during fireworks displays to reduce the risk of blinding accidents.

Fireworks can produce sounds that reach decibel levels as high as 150 dB, comparable to a jet engine at takeoff. Prolonged exposure or proximity to these loud noises can lead to temporary hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing in the ears) and permanent damage to the inner ear structures. To minimize these risks, maintain a safe distance from the fireworks and consider using earplugs or earmuffs to protect your hearing.

Considerations for families with young children and pets

“Supervise young children closely during fireworks displays to ensure they stay at a safe distance and don’t handle fireworks themselves,” said Dr. Jerusik. “Protect their sensitive ears with earmuffs or earplugs and use protective eyewear to shield their eyes from sparks and debris.” Talk to your children about the potential dangers of fireworks and emphasize the importance of staying a safe distance away from them.

Keep your pets indoors during fireworks displays to minimize their exposure to the loud noises and bright lights. Create a safe and comfortable environment indoors, and try playing soothing music or using white noise to help drown out the sound of fireworks.

Enjoying fireworks safely

To enjoy fireworks responsibly, follow these guidelines to protect your eyes and ears and ensure a safe environment for your family and pets:

  • Maintain distance: Always watch fireworks from a safe distance, at least 500 feet away.
  • Wear protective eyewear: Wear safety glasses or goggles to shield your eyes from debris, sparks and intense light flashes.
  • Use earmuffs or earplugs: Reduce the risk of hearing damage by using earmuffs or earplugs, especially for children or those sensitive to loud noises.
  • Supervise children: Keep a close eye on children during fireworks displays to ensure they don’t get too close or attempt to handle fireworks.
  • Consider pet safety:  Keep pets indoors to protect their sensitive ears from loud noises, which can cause distress or anxiety.
  • Avoid homemade fireworks: Never attempt to make or handle these, as they pose a significant hazard.
  • Stay prepared: Have a basic first aid kit handy in case of minor injuries such as burns or abrasions, and seek immediate medical attention for any serious eye or ear injuries.

“By following these guidelines and remaining vigilant about safety, you can enjoy fireworks displays responsibly while protecting your eyes and ears from potential harm,” said Dr. Jerusik.
