Deciding to undergo weight loss surgery can be a life-changing experience. Education and support are vital for the best outcomes and long-term success. Inspira’s multidisciplinary bariatric surgery team will ensure you are not alone through this journey. We offer a variety of educational sessions and support opportunities to get you prepared for surgery and on the road to recovery. Here are some of the resources you can access at Inspira:
Inspira’s bariatric information session provides education and discusses the surgical procedures we offer. During each session, we discuss surgery requirements like body mass index and comorbidities, the benefits and complications of weight loss surgery and frequently asked questions. Our virtual information sessions can be completed in the comfort of your home. To sign up for an information session, visit the Inspira Health website.
Our New Beginnings support group is for individuals preparing for bariatric surgery. We also have a graduate support group for those who have already had surgery. Our support groups feature a variety of speakers who share tips on stress management, mindful eating, body contouring and sleep health—factors that are important for short- and long-term success. These monthly support groups are free of charge for our patients.
Our bariatric surgery program requires a minimum of three sessions with a registered dietitian. During these sessions, we share knowledge and tools for success after surgery. Skills for success include label reading, portion control, hydration and protein requirements, vitamin and mineral supplementation and behavior modification. Our dietitians are also available after surgery for continued education or nutrition questions and concerns that may arise.
The pre-surgery class prepares patients for what to expect during pre-admission testing, hospitalization and discharge. We also review the recovery process, exercise and diet progression. The multidisciplinary care team is with you every step of the way to answer questions, help you understand the pre-op requirements and offer support.
We recognize that attending an in-person support group is not always convenient, especially for those who live far from our centers. To support these individuals, we have a private Facebook group restricted to patients who underwent weight loss surgery at Inspira. This online platform is a patient-driven, interactive resource for sharing the tools you found helpful on your journey or getting encouragement from fellow weight loss surgery patients. In this safe environment, you can receive and share information and tips and virtually meet other people who have encountered similar situations in their own weight loss journeys.
The Get Well Network is an online tool that allows the care team to stay in contact with patients throughout the weight loss journey. Our goal is to deliver an outstanding patient experience to help you achieve the best possible outcomes and long-term success after surgery. This no-cost network sends out alerts and reminders before and after surgery to keep you on track. This service also allows the patient to send messages, ask questions and voice concerns regarding non-emergent issues. The responses come directly from your program coordinator.
Inspira’s Peer Mentor Program aims to promote success, provide emotional support, reduce feelings of isolation and provide encouragement, guidance, motivation and role-modeling throughout your health journey. This program includes mentor/mentee relationships and mutual support relationships to go through the process together.
