What is grief? 

Grief is how we respond to the loss of someone or something we love. Although grief is most often associated with death, it can also result from other forms of loss. Employment layoff, divorce, and chronic illness can also precipitate grief. 

The grieving process is natural, and it can feel different for everyone. You may experience a wide range of emotions, including sadness, anger, guilt, and loneliness. In addition to emotional distress, grief can have physical effects on the body. Some bodily symptoms of grief are digestive issues, disrupted sleep patterns, increased inflammation, and muscular pain. 

For some people, grief is a short-term occurrence. For others, it can last for months or even years. Talk to your health care provider if you feel stuck in the grieving process or if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms:

  • Excessive self-blame
  • Thoughts of self-harm or suicide
  • Difficulty maintaining daily routines, such as going to work or cleaning your house 
  • Feelings of depression 
  • A lack of interest in activities that used to bring you joy  

Coping with grief

No matter how much time has passed, unexpected reminders can trigger grief, creating a wave of overwhelming emotions. “Without the proper support, coming to terms with a loss can be difficult,” said Balicki. “Grief has no definitive endpoint.”
