Read MoreThyroid nodules are solid or fluid-filled lumps on the thyroid gland located at the base of your neck. Inspira’s endocrinologists are here to diagnose and treat thyroid nodules and help you find relief from symptoms.
Thyroid nodules are growths on the thyroid gland, located at the base of the neck. They can be solid or fluid-filled and are usually benign, though a small percentage may be cancerous. Many people don’t experience symptoms, but monitoring nodules is important as they can signal an underlying issue. Causes include overgrowth of thyroid tissue, cysts, chronic inflammation, goiter, iodine deficiency, or thyroid disorders. In some cases, nodules can cause swallowing or breathing difficulties or lead to hyperthyroidism, causing symptoms like weight loss, muscle weakness, heat intolerance, and anxiety.
Most thyroid nodules cause swelling in the neck without any noticeable symptoms. Depending on the cause of your thyroid nodules, you may experience symptoms of hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism:
Thyroid nodules are often diagnosed during a routine physical exam or imaging for another issue. Your doctor may ask you to swallow while examining your thyroid, as the nodule will move. Diagnostic tests may include thyroid function tests, ultrasound, biopsy, or a thyroid scan to assess underlying conditions.
Treatment for thyroid nodules depends on the type, size, underlying causes and symptoms.
Medication can help your thyroid function properly if your body is making too much or too little thyroid hormone. Your doctor may also prescribe radioiodine therapy to shrink the nodule and treat hyperthyroidism.
If a biopsy shows a benign nodule, your doctor may recommend watchful waiting to see if it grows larger. Cancerous nodules may also be observed for changes, as small cancers have a low risk of growing.
If your thyroid nodule is making it hard to breathe or swallow, or if a biopsy shows a cancerous growth, your doctor may recommend surgery to remove part or all of your thyroid.
At Inspira, our endocrinology team takes a patient-centered approach to thyroid nodule treatment, tailoring care to each individual’s needs. Using advanced imaging and diagnostic techniques, we provide accurate assessments and develop personalized treatment plans. Whether through monitoring, medication, or surgical options, we prioritize effective, compassionate care. We also focus on making care accessible to our South Jersey community, ensuring ongoing support and helping patients feel informed and confident throughout their treatment journey.
Over 95 percent of thyroid nodules are non-cancerous. If your thyroid nodule is not causing symptoms, your doctor will likely recommend monitoring it for changes over time before taking a biopsy.
Thyroid nodules linked to genetics or autoimmune disorders can’t always be prevented. If you’re concerned about your thyroid function and health, talk to your doctor.
Thyroid nodules don’t always need treatment. If a thyroid nodule is unchanging and doesn’t cause unwanted symptoms, you may be able to live with it without treatment.
