Read MoreThe goal of weight management is to increase mindfulness about how nutrition and exercise can improve overall health. At Inspira, our experienced medical weight management providers can help assess your overall health and make a plan to reach your goals.
Weight management is the process of maintaining a healthy body weight through a combination of lifestyle choices, health care guidance and medication. Weight management may be right for people with obesity, obstructive sleep apnea, diabetes, menopause, infertility, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and people who are looking to gain weight or train for sports/competitions. Inspira’s approach to medical weight management is treating the chronic disease of obesity and decreasing the comorbid conditions associated with the disease.
We do not focus on the number on the scale but on fat mass reduction, maintenance or increasing muscle mass and decreasing visceral fat. Managing your weight isn’t always focused on weight loss, and may involve weight gain if your provider deems it necessary. You may also be referred for weight management before surgical procedures to ensure your safety during and after surgery. Our team can give you guidance on treatment options to improve overall health, which may include referrals to a physical therapist, registered dietitian or mental health professional.
Weight management is different for everyone, based on your health and lifestyle goals. Our team begins with a physical exam and a conversation about your weight loss or gain objectives. We’ll help you make realistic changes to your diet, exercise routine and daily habits to support long-term success.
Our providers can help refer you to a physical therapist for Total Body Physical Therapy if you have physical limitations with exercising, so you can begin to move in a safe and effective way. We also offer nutrition assessments and referrals to registered dietitians for personalized guidance. To track progress, we use our Body Composition Analysis tool every three months—supporting healthy fat loss while helping you maintain muscle mass.
Depending on your goals, weight management may include:
During the first visit, a weight management physician or nurse practitioner will assess your complete physical health and discuss how your mental health may impact your weight. Your provider will help you make a plan with small, sustainable lifestyle changes. Depending on your needs and goals, we may refer you to a physical therapist, registered dietitian, mental health professional or other specialists. Your provider may also recommend sleep studies, cardiac testing, genetic testing or a pharmacy consultation to explore treatment options for weight-related conditions.
Not always. Medical weight management focuses on helping you lose, gain or maintain weight with healthy habits and lifestyle changes. You may focus on medical weight management to prepare for bariatric surgery or to maintain your weight after bariatric surgery.
Most health insurers cover obesity screening and counseling, as they are considered preventive care for adults and children. You may also be covered for weight management as a treatment for certain conditions such as diabetes or obstructive sleep apnea. Although a consultation may be covered, not all insurance companies cover medications for weight loss. Please check with your insurance provider to find more details on what services are covered under your plan.
