Welcome to the Inspira Health General Surgery Residency Program. Our program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and is affiliated with the Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine in Glassboro, NJ.
Our residents rotate through all three Inspira Health Medical Centers (Vineland, Woodbury, and Elmer) and receive a wide breadth of clinical experience while working in different settings. In addition to Inspira facilities, our residents also rotate through several other partner hospitals to augment their surgical training across several subspecialty areas, including transplant and pediatric surgery. Our program is designed to provide consistent, graduated autonomy to our residents, both in and out of the operating room. Upon graduation, residents have consistently fulfilled the operative requirements for American Board of Surgery and ACGME in all index case areas.
Our program’s curriculum is designed to maximize the learning for the surgical resident. We provide a minimum of four-hour weekly protected time. Didactics are based on the SCORE Curriculum and enhanced by the TrueLearn Question bank. The curriculum consists of senior resident and attending physician led lectures, grand rounds, hands-on training, participation in a journal club and various other conferences.
In addition to our classroom learning opportunities, Inspira Health has recently opened the Jane and Peter Galetto Jr. Simulation Center at Inspira Medical Center Vineland. This is a brand new, fully equipped, training and education center with an advanced laparoscopic simulator as well as simulation mannequins. Residents also receive training on the DaVinci Xi robot throughout the course of their study. In addition, all residents have full access to the Rowan University Library which offers extensive on-line resources. Our research program is exceptionally strong, with all residents participating in clinical research, presenting at national and international meetings, and having at least one published manuscript by graduation.
Inspira’s General Surgery program is committed to resident health and wellness. We have a formal faculty mentoring program, and residents have the ability to address any concern in a formal or informal setting with their mentor. The education curriculum is structured to provide residents with personal free time on several occasions during the year. The program encourages activities outside of work. Many residents take advantage of the local opportunities for city life (Philadelphia or New York), beach (NJ Shore), outdoor activities, sports, wine/food tasting, etc.
Upon completion of the program, our graduates are fully capable to enter private practice. Those wishing to obtain further training can pursue fellowships of their choice. Our past graduates have matched into highly competitive fellowship positions throughout the country including in trauma, breast, plastic & reconstructive surgery, and minimally invasive technique.
Inspira Health’s General Surgery Residency Program offers exceptional clinical training in a supportive environment with tremendous opportunities for personal and professional growth.
The General Surgery Residency Program is held in Inspira’s Medical Centers in Vineland and Woodbury.

The physicians, surgeons, nurses and multidisciplinary staff Inspira residents work side-by-side with each day are leading experts in their respective fields. With decades of combined experience, our talented clinical staff provides exceptional medical training coupled with insightful guidance on how to thrive as a medical professional. Through clinical training, one-on-one coaching and mentorship, and didactic teaching techniques, our team will prepare you for a future in both private or academic practice, or further training in your desired sub-specialty.
Many competing residency programs are restricted to university-based environments. Through several partnerships with area hospitals and universities, Inspira takes both a university- and community-based approach to medical education. Our residents receive exposure to a wide range of medical cases by practicing within our diverse, and often underserved, communities. Our programs are smaller than those offered by large universities and contain fewer residents, which allows clinicians to gain more in-depth, hands-on training in a variety of unique settings.
Inspira’s medical and community health centers offer residents the best of both worlds: quaint small-town living with easy access to major metropolitan areas and attractions. Our programs are located near Philadelphia and the Jersey shore, with New York and Baltimore less than 100 miles away. The region boasts a variety of different options for outdoor recreation, fine and casual dining, shopping, entertainment and more. Residents often choose to reside in downtown Philly, suburban Collingswood, or any one of the bustling boroughs in between.
